Heart Hospital

The design of UT Medical Center's specialized Heart Hospital occurred in two phases — an initial four-story building and a later five-story vertical expansion — creating the distinctive "oval rotunda" that has become an iconic architectural symbol of the Medical Center's presence.

The building houses cardio pulmonary acute care, neurological intensive care, and related medical programs. The vertical expansion was carefully completed in phases to allow the Heart Hospital to remain fully operational during construction, with minimal disruption to patients.

The interior design prioritizes surfaces and finishes that are easy to clean and maintain, yet introduce elements of warmth and biophilia through the use of natural wood and warm lighting. Because light sensitivity is an important consideration for neuro patients, the interior design of the neurocritical care floor avoided fixtures directly above patient beds and offset fixtures in corridors to ensure even light distribution. Soothing, neutral colors and soft blues and greens create a calming atmosphere.
