Contemporary Women's Health
For this group of all-women physicians in an OB-GYN practice, Barber McMurry created a modern and sophisticated medical office and spa.
The design is cleanly-detailed, modern, and minimalist, with a palette of glass, metal, and wood. From the centrally-located entry, the clinical practice and spa diverge, each gaining its own identity.
The spa anchors the west end of the building, identified by extensive use of tongue-and-groove cypress siding and glass, both inside and out. The spa includes a yoga studio, massage room, and aesthetician. In the east wing, the clinical practice includes exam and procedure rooms, ultrasound, laboratory, offices and support spaces.
Extensive glazing bathes the interiors with natural light and carefully-framed views, while a translucent film on exam room windows maintains privacy. The recurrent use of cypress connects the interiors with the architectural shell, echoing the abundant trees surrounding the facility. Finishes are minimal. Concrete, wood and warm gray furnishings and fabrics lend a feel that is less sterile and more welcoming than a typical medical office.
"This building improves the human condition for those who will use this facility for their health, and the rest of us who may never step within its doors, but will regularly see it in our built environment. It reminds us to lift our aspirations whenever we can."
