Neyland Stadium

Before the University of Tennessee's football stadium took on the name of Gen. Robert Neyland, Barber McMurry designed the 1930s expansions that elevated Shields-Watkins Field to what would become one of the most intimidating stadiums in college athletics.

The design, still visible in places beneath the modern-era expansions, included iconic brick archways, highlighting the university's still-developing Tennessee Collegiate Gothic aesthetic. The expansion added dormitories beneath the stands on the east and south sides while the stadium grew to hold about 31,000 spectators.
